You will notice that there are no details of the now infamous 'Additional Costs Allowance'. This is quite simply because I have not claimed any personal expenses or other expenses allowed within that budget. As an inner London MP I am not entitled to claim for a second home, and I have made the decision not to claim my travel expenses or any other personal expenses.
I am pleased to announce that I can now publish my accounts. I am publishing my Incidental Expenses Provision for the financial year 07/08 along with the Communications Allowance for the same year. This is the most recent information I hold, as the receipts for year 08/09 have not yet been fully prepared by the Finance Department. You will notice that information on theses form is blacked out, or even some pages are missing, this is to protect the personal details of companies and individuals who have provided services for me. Details such as addresses, bank account details and telephone numbers can not be released for fear of problems created for those who have provided services as well as being a breach of the data protection act. For the most part, the finance office has decided which information to black out, but I have made that decision in some instances as well.
Changes are afoot in Parliament over this. We quite rightly no longer have a say in our salaries, and we should have no say as to the kind of size of our allowances. There is, however, a need for what has been called the second homes cost and in a Parliament in which the majority of MPs represent constituencies hundreds of miles from Westminster, the cost of being in London should be reimbursed. But the intricacies of how these allowances can be managed fairly and without possibility of abuse, remains the question of the hour.
A word of warning - please don't let all these revelations affect turnout to vote for the European and local elections (4th June) under the ‘plague on all your houses’ assessment. Furthermore, turning to the extremist parties that are waiting in the wings, usually the beneficiaries of low voter turnout, in times like these would have grave consequences indeed. Letting them in would be cutting off the nose to spite the face. This country, along with every other country in the world, is facing super human problems - the economy, environment, poverty, disease, seemingly intractable and permanent conflict - all of which would not be helped by the entrance of an inexperienced, racist and anti-Semitic group. |
