On Thursday 9 December, Glenda Jackson MP voted against the Government's proposals to raise tuition fees to an unacceptably high level. The tuition fee rise was approved by the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats. During the election, the Liberal Democrats had made a pledge to vote against tuition fee rises - a pledge that they broke.
Glenda said:
"I am hugely sceptical of the coalition Government's constant cry that the fees are being raised because of the financial situation the country is in. I do not accept this for two reasons. Firstly, I do not agree that transferring national debt to individual debt is a satisfactory or fair way to deal with the problem. Secondly, I suspect that the Government are pursuing an agenda of social engineering." |
