Glenda Jackson was delighted to attend a Friends of the Earth country show outside parliament last week (27th October 2010). Next month she will also be voting in favour of a new law to break the hidden chain linking meat and dairy from British factory fams to wildlife and rainforest destruction in South America.
Friends of the Earth's MOOvemnet for rainforest-free food aims to help stop factory farming destroying the planet. Animals in British factory fams are fed soy grown by destroying forests and other natural habitats in South America. Rob Flello MP has introduced a Sustainable Livestock Bill and it will be voted for in Parliament on 12th November.
Glenda Jackson MP said. "I am proud to be supporting a new law to halt the environmental damage being caused by factory farming. Importing our meat and animal feed is wiping out rainforests and wildlife - but we can change this! We need to support our farmers to rear animals that are born, bred and fed British".
As well as the environmental damange that soy grown in South America causes, reducing our need for feed crops from South America will have a good impcat on helping UK farmers, protecting global biodiversity and preventing climate change. Furthermore, reducing our consumption of meat has many health benefits and could cuts costs for the NHS.
