Glenda Challenges Coalition to debate Rape Anonymity

GlendaintheHouse16th June 2010
Glenda Jackson has appeared in the House of Commons to challenge the coalition Tory-Lib-Dem Government to debate their plans to give anonymity to those accused of rape.

Glenda said, "I am not the only one astronished to hear the coalition Government proposing protection for those accused of rape as one of their first actions in Government - many local people are very worried about these plans. During business questions, I challenged the coalition to let the House of Commons debate this idea as soon as possible, although I can't say I got a straight answer.

There is a serious problem with very low convictions for rape in this country, which the Labour Party took action to improve when we were in Government. I believe any Government's first duty is to protect the victims of such a heinous crime, not the perpetrators".
