New Schools and Frank Barnes school

We have recently received an update from the Department for Children, Schools and Families. Glenda has written several times to the Secretary of State Department regarding the plans to change Frank Barnes School. On 19th December 2007 Glenda wrote a joint letter with Frank Dobson, MP for Holborn and St Pancreas, to Rt Hon Ed Balls MP outlining their concerns that the proposals to build a new secondary school on the site at Swiss Cottage may threaten the continued existence of Frank Barnes School for Deaf Children. We expressed our fears that merging the school with Blanche Neville School in Haringey would mean severe access constraints and not enough places. Finally, we requested a meeting with Ed Balls to discuss what action could be taken, and what other alternatives there may be for Frank Barnes school.

The update letter, dated February 2008, outlines hopes that there will be two Academy proposals for the Southern part of the borough. The first proposal is for an Academy for 11-18 years olds, specialising in science and mathematics located on a site situated on Adelaide Road. The Academy will be a joint venture between Camden Council and University College London. Finally, Andrew Adonis has agreed to meet with Glenda and Frank on the 8th April and we will keep you updated with the outcomes of this meeting.
