   Crime in London during 2007

Met PoliceThe London Metropolitan Police Service have just released their crime figures for 2007.  They show that overall there were nearly 57,000 fewer offences in 2007 than in 2006 which is a decrease of 6.1%, but there was an increase of 4% in gun crime.  These statistics were reflected in Camden also, when the Met released Camden-specific figures for May - November 2007.

The tables below show some of the statistics for 2007, but in summary the MPS Deputey Commissioner Paul Stephenson made the following statement to the media:

"these results show that 2007 was the fifth consecutive year that overall crime has fallen in London and it was at its lowest for nine years.  These figures show that London is getting safer and I'm pleased particular progress has been made on tackling robbery, knife crime and hate crime against a backdrop of unprecedented challenges.  Depite this, the number ofyoung people murdered in London over the past year is entirely unacceptable.  Tackling this will continue to be a major priority for the MPS as we go into 2008".  The increase in gun-enabled crime in 2007 continues to cause concern, and appears to be largely driven by a rise in offences involving non-lethal weapons (CS gas and pepper spray) rather than the more serious crimes dealt with by Operation Trident.
