Last week we received a letter from Phil Woolas
MP, the Minister for the Environment explaining that the Government
consultation on the Climate Change Bill has now closed and defra
will be publishing its findings in due course. defra have
expressed their appreciation of the wide range of views and
contributions submitted during this consultation:
"It is right that the public, Parliament and a
wide range of interested organisations have an oppotunity to
discuss and debate the Bill's proposals, as climate change is an
issue which affects us all and this Bill is intended to create a
framework that lasts for more than a generation".
defra are aiming to introduce the final Bill to Parliament in
autumn this year and the target date for Royal Assent is Spring
2008. Documents and links relating to the Climate Change Bill
can be found at:
http://www.defra.gov.uk/corporate/consult/climatechange.htm
Phil Woolas also informed us that the policies in the 2007
Energy White Paper, published in May 2007, will result in carbon
savings of between 23 - 33 million tonnes of carbon (MtC) in 2020
(with inclusion of the effect of the EU ETS). The upper end
of these savings will take us just within our target of 26%
reduction by 2020 against 1990 levels.
