The Mayor of
London, Ken Livingstone, has launched a scheme which means that up to 250,000 of the least-well-off Londoners can now benefit from half price bus and tram travel. The initiative entitles all
Londoners on Income Support to receive half-price bus and tram travel, including lone parents, carers, long-term sick people and disabled people. These means that those Londoners on the
lowest income will pay 45p for a single bus journey, which is less than a quarter of the £2 cash fare.
The initiative follows an agreement signed last year by the Mayor, Transport for London and Venezuelan Oil company Petroleos de Venezuela Europa, for fuel for the Capital's bus fleet. For
